This is traditional craft of Ningbo, and goes back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1636-1912) dynasties, with many craftsmen and embroidered works that were in greater demand. As late as 1932, records show 15,000 pieces of Ningbo embroidery being sold to Southeast Asian countries, putting it in close competition with the embroidery of the city of Suzhou and Hunan and Sichuan provinces, thanks to its distinct features. The Ningbo version has a special local style with colors such as, black, grey, dark blue, dark red, brownish yellow, and grey-green. Its patterns are based mostly on popular items of the ordinary folk, including dragons, phoenix, ruyi(symbol of good fortune), peonies, and hundreds of birds in an elegant style, with its own antique flavor and folk characteristics.

These products are mainly made of pure silk or silk and rayon. In more recent years, in keeping with the principle of making art that serves daily life, and injecting art into daily necessities, there are continuous innovations in the form, making the embroidery products both artistic and practical.
