Established after the Liberation of China (AD 1949), Ningbo Yong Opera Troupe is now a first-grade troupe in Zhejiang province. The troupe has developed a number of famous actors such as Jin Yulan, Huang Junqing, Xu Qiuxia and Wang Zaisheng, in addition to noted script writers such as Hu Xiaohai, Tian Fang, Lu Sheng and Zhou Dongzhao.

The operas staged by the troupe include Half Pairs of Scissors and Let it Be in Qing Dynasty costume, The Snail Girl in ancient costume and The Thunderstorm and The Ridiculous Marriage in modern fashions. The modern opera Two Bothers, staged by the troupe in 1954, took part in the East China Opera Joint Performance and received a wide reputation among audiences. Recently staged, The Hard Family and Sang Lan have both received awards at the provincial opera festival.

Yong opera, with its light melodies and wide themes, provides a minute representation of life, in particular, and has found wide popularity among the people of Ningbo, Shanghai and Zhoushan.

Under the care and support of the group, the troupe now has its own theatre, called "White Cloud Theatre", which has accommodated nearly 600 audiences. The stage of the theatre is 15 meters in depth, 14 meters in width and 21 meters high.
