Ningbo-Zhoushan port staged a strong rebound in 2016, becoming one of the fastest-growing ports in the world with a year-on-year increase in container throughput of 4.5 percent, according to the port's 2016 report released on Jan 13, 2017.

The port in Zhejiang province defied predictions by consulting firm Drewry Shipping Consultants that global container shipments would endure sluggish growth in 2016.

Ningbo-Zhoushan rose to fourth in a league table of the world's largest container ports in terms of throughput, published in a report by intelligence company Lloyd's List in August 2016.

What's more, of the top five ports in Lloyd’s List's report, Ningbo-Zhoushan posted the fastest growth in container throughput in its 2016 annual statement, indicating that the port may rise even higher in the league table in 2017.

The port's success has been built on the development strategy it launched in early 2016, which has seen it strengthen cooperation with global shipping giants, optimize ocean routes, combine shipping with railway transportation, and develop domestic trade shipping.
