The Ningbo government has recently made the issue of water pollution a priority with the determination of raising the quality of heavily polluted water above the national minimum by the end of 2017.

A mobilization assembly took place on March 25, outlining clear goals and major tasks for people around the city.

Tang Yijun, Party secretary of the city, addressed the assembly expressing a strong determination to significantly reduce the amount of severely polluted water in Ningbo. He urged all government agencies to assume responsibility and improve efficiency. Tang also called for all residents to actively participate, "Improving water quality is a common expectation of the people of Ningbo. Instead of onlookers, I hope our residents can be contributors to the solution."

To raise the city's water quality by the end of the year, Ningbo has put forward several tasks. Thirty-four sub-districts in the city will control the direct emission of sewage to rivers and lakes. Dredging projects will be carried out to remove ten million cubic meters of sand, silt and mud from river basins throughout 2017. Heavy pollutant industries will be revolutionized through the removal of outdated and harmful companies.

Additional improvements to agricultural irrigation, water conservation and domestic waste sorting have also been brought under focus. Ningbo will make full use of its river chief system to ensure every river and lake in villages, towns and counties are under the direct supervision of government officials.
