Qiu Dongyao: Ningbo eyes deeper ties with Eastern Europe
Ningbo in East China's Zhejiang province will prioritize strengthening cooperation with countries in Central and Eastern Europe as it strives to become a major international port, said the city's mayor, Qiu Dongyao, at the 2017 China-CEEC Mayors' Forum on June 8.
The city on China's east coast is often described as a living fossil recording the history of the Silk Road, according to Qiu, and the mayor believes that the ancient trade route's modern equivalent, the Belt and Road Initiative, offers Ningbo huge new opportunities for development.
Qiu proposed building a more effective inter-city communication platform, deepening bilateral cooperation on trade, ports and industry, promoting bilateral investment and enhancing exchanges in culture and city management.
The 2017 China-CEEC Mayor's Forum is a highlight of the 3rd China-CEEC Investment and Trade Expo held in Ningbo on June 8-12. The forum brought together dozens of city leaders from China and 16 countries from Central and Eastern Europe to discuss topics including smart transport and green travel.
