Participants at the 4th Global New Material Startups Contest held in Silicon Valley on Aug 7 went head to head in a bid to win places at the semifinals and finals to be held in Ningbo.

Ningbo, a coastal city in Zhejiang province is seeking good startup projects in the new materials industry.

Winners of the Silicon Valley contest will compete with projects from other countries at the final event on Sep 24 and 25 for financial support from the Ningbo government and an introduction to the city, which tops all Chinese cities in terms of the scale of production and research in the new material industry.

Ningbo's new material industry is developing fast and the environment for businesses is attractive as well. An important base for China's new material sector, Ningbo is home to a lot of research institutes including Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Nottingham Ningbo New Materials Institute.

Jiang Yuhong, consul for Science and Technology at the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in San Francisco introduced Ningbo's advantages to young participants in Silicon Valley.

"Startup businesses at Ningbo National Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone will get preferential policy support not only from the municipal government, but also from the provincial and even the central government," Jiang said.
