Zhang Lingfei, a teacher in Ninghai county, Zhejiang province, passed away recently. He had been ferrying students safely to and from school for 15 years, from 2002 to 2017, and was considered by many as a sort of "guardian of dreams" for these children, as he ensured they were able to pursue their studies under the safety of his supervision and protection.

In 2002, due to a decrease in the number of school-age children, the primary school at Geyangyang village was merged with Yuejing Primary School across the sea. The quickest and most convenient way to get across the sea was by ferry.

Out of concern for the students' safety, Zhang volunteered to escort them. "It's not easy for children living on remote islands to receive an education," Zhang said. For the next 15 years, he upheld his promise, ferrying students back and forth regardless of weather.

During the 20-minute ferry ride, Zhang always kept close track of the children, ensuring none of them got too close to the railings.

Zhang Mingzhu, a graduate of Yuejing Primary School, never forgot the sense of safety Mr. Zhang had provided, "After the ferry landed, he wouldn't rest until all students were either picked up by parents or delivered safely to their front door."

In 2017, Zhang was diagnosed with liver cancer and had to stop ferrying students. According to Ye Zhaoming, principal of Yuejing Primary School, what most concerned Zhang during treatment was who would assume the responsibility of escorting the students.

Zhang passed away on Jan 14, 2018. He would find comfort in knowing that his colleagues have taken over responsibility for escorting the students. "Even if there is only one student to ferry, we will continue the service," said Ye.
