China's first intelligent "super expressway", which is both safer and more efficient than conventional highways, will soon begin construction in East China's Zhejiang province, local media reported on April 8.

A construction team will begin work on the intersection between the new expressway and the Hangzhou metro line 1 within a few days.

The intelligent, high-speed and environmentally conscious freeway will connect the cities of Hangzhou, Shaoxing and Ningbo and is designed to ease traffic congestion on the existing Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway.

The new expressway will incorporate a monitoring system as well as a warning system to maintain the safety of vehicles while increasing the average traffic speed. It will also include internet of vehicles technology and will support autonomous driving in the future.

The expressway is designed to accommodate a 20 to 30 percent increase in vehicle speed. Charging poles for electric cars will be installed along the road to support the use of clean energy within the auto industry.
