A vision for the green development of ports along the ancient Maritime Silk Road was proposed at the fifth Maritime Silk Road Port International Cooperation Forum recently held in Ningbo, Zhejiang province.

The forum, held in unison with the China Maritime Forum 2019, was attended by around 388 guests from 44 countries and regions. In-depth discussions were held regarding the development of the Belt and Road Initiative and port cooperation.

The vision calls for all parties present to promote the application of green energy and strengthen cooperation to ensure the sustainable development of ports.

Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, the world's largest port in terms of cargo turnover, has been stressing the high-quality development of ports in recent years, according to Mao Jianhong, chairman of the Zhejiang Provincial Seaport Investment & Operation Group Co and president of the Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group.

The port has implemented many measures to promote its green development, such as the use of shore power to reduce pollution and the application of intelligent equipment to improve efficiency.

Experts suggested that digital transformation be accelerated through the use of 5G and internet of things technologies, in order to reduce work intensity and improve the working environment.

The Maritime Silk Road Port International Cooperation Forum, initiated in 2015, has been held for four consecutive years and has attracted a total of 1,500 guests in port, shipping and logistics industries from countries involved in the BRI.

"As the global economy is now in a critical period of tremendous change, cooperation between ports along the Maritime Silk Road will promote common prosperity among related countries and the sustainable development of the entire world," said Xu Zuyuan, Maritime Ambassador of the International Maritime Organization.
