The Ningbo Lishe International Airport posted 60,400 tons of throughput of cargo from January to July, up 8.7 percent year-on-year, local authorities said on Aug 13.

The growth rate topped all the airports in East China's Zhejiang province over the period.

The scenario bucked a gloomy picture in air freight segment globally and is largely due to a flurry of measures the airport has taken to optimize airline networks in response to the shrinking air cargo demands since last year.

A plane carrying merchandises including garment and jewelry from Ningbo and its surrounding cities such as Yiwu, Taizhou and Hangzhou departed from Ningbo Lishe International Airport for Bangkok, Thailand on July 17.

The move marks the opening of cross-border e-commerce export business in the airport.

The throughput of its all-cargo freighter planes exceeded 20,000 metric tons in July this year, with an air freighter run by SF Express arrived in Ningbo.

As of Aug 12, the cargo transported by all-cargo freighter planes surpassed 21,000 tons in the city, up 32.8 percent year-on-year.

Meanwhile, from January to July this year, Ningbo airport handled more than 40,000 tons of cargo via bellyhold of passenger aircrafts.

Starting from this year, the airport ramped up efforts to attract cargo transportation deals from the cities such as Jinhua, Shaoxing, Taizhou and Zhoushan and coordinated numerous airliners to operate belly cargo businesses on some international routes.

Currently, the airport has been designated a national port to import chilled aquatic products, edible aquatic animals and fruits.
