Likeng village in Ningbo, eastern China's Zhejiang province was recently listed among the ninth batch of national demonstration towns/villages for characteristic agriculture, according to a statement by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

A total of 12 towns/villages across Zhejiang made the list.

Likeng village is renowned for its melon plantation, which covers an area of 1000 mu (66.6 hectares) and has an annual capacity of 1,500 tons.

In 2018, the village had an agricultural income of 11.26 million yuan ($1.68 million), with a per capita income of 19,880 yuan.

Ningbo's decision to set up national demonstration towns/villages for characteristic agriculture, of which there are 26 so far, comes as part of the nation's efforts to increase the standard of living in rural areas.

The demonstration towns/villages are essential to boosting the structural reform of agricultural supply side and promoting the integrated development of primary, secondary and tertiary industries in rural areas.

Famous agricultural products from the city include grain products, vegetable processing products, fruits, aquatic products, flowers seedlings and Chinese medicinal herbs.
