Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province ranked 22nd nationwide in terms of nighttime economy, a recent report shows.

The China City Nighttime Economy Influence Report 2019, compiled by Tencent and Liaowang Institute, evaluated the nighttime economy of 50 cities across 28 provinces and municipalities based on factors such as economic foundation, popularity of business areas and scale of entertainment venues.

Nighttime economy refers to service sector activities between 6 pm and 6 am, including shopping, dining, tours, entertainment, studying, film and television, and relaxation.

Chongqing topped the list, followed by Beijing, Changsha, Qingdao, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Jinan, Chengdu, Xi'an and Shijiazhuang.

Several industry insiders said that the report can provide guidance even if it does not give a complete picture of China's nighttime economy.

Ningbo’s nighttime economy has much potential in light of its robust economic growth and large migrant population, said an official from the Ningbo municipal bureau of commerce.

Ningbo experienced success with its Ningbo-Nice Carnival, which launched in 2018 and attracted 150,000 visitors in seven days. The local tourism authority estimated that the carnival generated roughly 300 million yuan ($44.7 million) in tourism revenue.

In addition to the carnival, nighttime activities such as concerts, dramas and basketball games all enjoy huge popularity among local residents.

The city is considering a series of measures to stimulate nighttime consumption, including extending the operating time of public transportation and developing more cultural and creative products.

"We need to understand real demand and stimulate consumption," said the official.
