The beaches of Yushan Island in Ningbo resemble the Milky Way at night, when they come aglow with an endless web of glowing blue lights.

Situated about 25 nautical miles southeast of Shipu town, Xiangshan county, Yushan Island is a rustic getaway covering an area of 0.5 square kilometers.

The flickering lights are actually alive, and are sometimes referred to as "Blue Tears". They are caused by ostracods, small crustaceans that are washed up on the island’s beaches by the rising tides. The flickering blue lights produced by these little creatures light up the night, making the sky look as if it is glowing blue.

Most of the ostracods use light as a defense mechanism, but some use it for mating. Sadly, they only survive for a few seconds.

In addition to admiring the blue tears, the island is also a wonderful place for camping and fishing.

The island's large grassy knoll is a perfect place to pitch tents, and the hotels, with their captivating views of the sea, are also a special treat.

Located at the intersection of ocean currents, Yushan abounds with marine resources and has been dubbed the "Number One Fishing Site in Asia".
