The expansion of the Chuangshan port, the world's second largest container terminal, was completed on July 22, according to local media reports.

A 70,000-ton container berth and related supporting facilities passed acceptance on the day and will be put into use soon.

The new berth, with a designed annual capacity of 620,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and an investment of 530 million yuan ($76.8 million), started construction in December 2018.

The number of container berths at Chuanshan port has been increased to 11, with the coastline extending to 3,740 meters.

Affiliated with Ningbo Zhoushan Port, the largest port by throughput volume worldwide, Chuangshan port is capable of accommodating the world's largest container vessel.

Its container throughput has exceeded 10 million three years in a row. In 2019, the terminal handled a total of 10.35 million TEUs, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the total in Ningbo Zhoushan Port.

To date, it has opened 52 container routes, including 30 connecting with countries involved in the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.

The management from Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group said that the expansion of the container terminal will enhance Ningbo Zhoushan Port's container handling capacity and core competitiveness.

In mid-April, a container transported by rail was unloaded at Chuanshan port, indicating that the sea port has become a railway stop, making it possible for goods transported by rail to the port to be directly shipped to other countries and vice versa.
