Ningbo in East China's Zhejiang province has recently made great efforts to improve its urban surroundings in a delicate manner.

More than 20 sports parks have been built under overpasses throughout the city in attempts to utilize idle land and create more exercise venues for local residents.

The city has also been working to enhance the surrounding environment of schools across the city. Jiangbei Experimental Primary School is one such example.

The school is surrounded by numerous residential communities with a dense population. By partnering with Peking University and local design companies, Jiangbei district has come up with a plan to improve the area, which spans nearly 6,000 square meters.

Novel facilities like smart street lamps and corridors that serve as places for people to escape the heat and rain have been erected in the area.

Comparing them to the "nerve endings" of urban management, Shui Haofeng, who's responsible for the project, said that the facilities reflect the city's charm.

In addition, the city has also employed several cutting-edge technologies like big data to facilitate urban management.

An electronic fence program has recently been launched by Chinese bike-sharing provider Hello Bike in Ningbo's Yinzhou district on a pilot basis.

The program forces users to park bikes in designated berths equipped with Bluetooth studs or they will not be able to return them, said a head official from the Yinzhou comprehensive administrative law enforcement bureau.

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 manhole covers in Sanjiangkou, a commercial block in downtown Ningbo, have also been monitored in real time. To date, the area coverage under smart management in the city has expanded to 756 square kilometers.
