Ningbo Art Gallery reopened to the public today after eight months of renovation, according to local media reports.

Designed by Wang Shu, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, Ningbo Art Gallery officially opened on Oct 11, 2005 with a floor area of 23,100 square meters and an exhibition area of nearly 6,000 square meters.

The gallery, which hosts an average of 60 art exhibitions annually, has formed sister relations with numerous foreign galleries and is widely considered as one of the galleries with highest frequency of international exchanges in China.

It suspended operations and commenced renovations in April as its outdated facilities had been unable to meet the requirements of modern exhibitions.

The damaged facade and floors have been restored and its interior showrooms have been reorganized to create an additional exhibition area of more than 300 square meters.

Three new multi-media art exhibition rooms have also been introduced to showcase contemporary experimental art works from home and abroad.

The annex on the west side of the gallery has been converted into a public education center, which comprises a painting exhibition hall, an interactive area and an education and training center for children.

A biennial painting exhibition commenced at the gallery on the same day.
