Ningbo was recently conferred the honorary title of "Zhejiang Provincial Food Safety City", according to local market supervision authorities.

The title is a recognition of the city's effectiveness in food safety supervision.

Ningbo is among the first cities in Zhejiang to urge Party and government officials to be responsible for food safety in their respective jurisdictions. A detailed list of work requirements and tasks has been formulated for them.

The city has also established a food safety liability insurance operation and service center to improve the level of food safety risk prevention and control. The facility is the nation's first private non-enterprise organization.

Presently, the total value of food safety liability premiums in Ningbo has amounted to 83.17 million yuan ($12.8 million), with the sum insured reaching 22.87 billion yuan, ranking high in Zhejiang and China. 

Concerted efforts have been made by the local government to strengthen food safety supervision in places including canteens of old-age service institutions, school canteens, and rural banquets.

The city has been vigorously promoting the application of internet technologies and accelerating the development of a food safety traceability system.

A three-year campaign to transform and upgrade local grocery markets has also been launched. The campaign will help promote the standardization of food safety in wholesale markets of agricultural products.

By the end of 2019, the city had constructed 12 provincial-level demonstration supermarkets selling meats and vegetables.
