Mark Phillips, prime minister of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, recently expressed his gratitude to China for its help in restoring electricity in its capital Georgetown.

The country sent an urgent assistance request to the Chinese Embassy in Guyana on Dec 1, after the power supply to some parts of Georgetown were disrupted due to undersea cables at the mouth of the Demerara River being damaged by ship anchors.

The new government of Guyana defined the situation as a "national emergency", given the high demand for electricity in the upcoming New Year and with the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the country.

With the support of Zhejiang and Ningbo, a team of three technicians from Ningbo Orient Cable Co Ltd was dispatched to lend support to the Latin American country.

The team arrived in Guyana on Dec 12 and successfully repaired the submarine cable in the Demerara River on Dec 24.

Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Cui Jianchun said that the emergency repair mission exemplifies the friendship between the two countries and China's people-centered approach in promoting the development of bilateral relations.
