5G has increasingly become commonplace in Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province, and can be spotted in sectors ranging from telecommunications to medical care to transportation and industrial production.

Official data shows that more than 10,000 5G base stations have been built in the city, ranking second in the province.

Some 5G-enabled equipment used for disinfection, cleaning and temperature monitoring have been put into service at some hospitals in Ningbo following the COVID-19 outbreak.

Some communities in the city have been using a smart residential community management system to manage data related to personnel, vehicles and people who have been quarantined at home.

The super-fast communication network has also made Internet of Vehicles (IoV) a reality, which allows vehicles to communicate in real time with their human drivers, pedestrians, other vehicles, and roadside infrastructure.

Huang Dongming, an expert in 5G vehicle-to-road collaboration at the Geely Auto Research Institute in Ningbo, said that Geely Auto has to date developed more than 10 kinds of driverless application scenarios.

The application of 5G network can also be seen in the operation of the Ningbo Zhoushan port, the world's largest port by cargo throughput volume.

Six 5G-enabled tyred gantry cranes have been put into use at the port, reducing labor costs by more than 50 percent. Three ordinary trucks have also been upgraded to 5G driverless trucks, with a total of 10 expected to become operational in the near future.

Meanwhile, an increasing number of enterprises from the city have been seeking smart transformation and upgrading by leveraging technologies including 5G and industrial internet.

One such example is Youngor, a local garment brand which is constructing a 5G plant in Ruili in Yunan province. The new plant is expected to improve production efficiency by 25 percent and help the company rake in an additional of 30 million yuan ($4.62 million) in profits per year.
