Consumption tops 1b yuan in Ningbo during May Day holiday

The sales volume of 50 monitored businesses including shopping malls, supermarkets, car dealerships, hotels, and restaurants in Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province hit 1.08 billion yuan ($166.3 million) during the five-day May Day holiday, which ended on May 4, official statistic show.

The figure represents a year-on-year decrease of 2.5 percent, according to the Ningbo Municipal Bureau of Commerce.

The coupons issued by local authorities during the holiday spurred consumption worth 233 million yuan. Consumption was predominantly in sectors including home appliances and automobiles.

Specifically, the surveyed shopping malls in Ningbo generated 158 million yuan in sales, while the sampled supermarkets reported an uptick of 14.8 percent to 203 million yuan in sales. Among them, Yonghui supermarket achieved sales of 89.41 million yuan, a year-on-year growth of 27.2 percent.

The average daily ticket sales of the city's cinemas was nearly 600,000 yuan during the May Day holiday, nearly four times higher than the average recorded in the week before the holiday, according to Lighthouse, an Alibaba-owned box office tracker.
