A sailing race featuring 50 sailors from 15 teams was held on Dongqian Lake in Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province on May 29, local media reported.

Dongqian Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in Zhejiang and is three times the size of West Lake in Hangzhou.

The lake spans about 20 square kilometers and has a shoreline of 30 kilometers. The lake has an average depth of 2.2 meters, making it suitable for all kinds of water sports.

Several high-profile sailing events such as the National Youth Sailing Championships and the National Funboard Championships have been held at the lake over the years.

According to the agreement reached by Ningbo and the Chinese Yachting Association last June, Dongqian Lake will be developed into a national demonstration base for the sailing industry.

Sailing has become increasingly popular in China after it was introduced to the country in the 1950s.

Apart from the race on May 29, three other sailing events are scheduled to be held in Ningbo, including in its Xiangshan county – the venue for the sailing contests of the 19th Asian Games - from May to August.
