After three years of reconstruction, Baozhu Building, a 183-year-old private library in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, reopened on July 23.

The library, located in the city's Cicheng town, was constructed by Feng Benhuai, ancestor of famous Chinese writer Feng Jicai. Historical evidence suggests that it was home to more than 10,000 books at its peak.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Feng's family donated all the books to the Xiling Seal Art Society, a Chinese arts organization in Hangzhou.

Reconstruction on the building started in 2018 and was completed in 2021.

The 5,000-square-meter reconstructed area includes the former library building, former residence of Feng's family, a gazebo, and a climate-controlled book depository. It will serve as a public cultural space, offering exhibition and cultural communication services.

At the opening ceremony, Feng Jicai called for more participation from all walks of life in reading activities at Baozhu Building.

"The reopening of the library is essential to the protection and promotion of historical cultural heritages," said Feng, "I hope everyone can not only enjoy reading here but also do more, such as donating books to the library."
