Liu Huichang, an 88-year-old resident of Ningbo, Zhejiang province, has dedicated 28 years to studying English, showcasing an extraordinary passion for the language.

In 1996, freshly retired, Liu attended a few English classes at a local senior university with a friend and unexpectedly fell in love with the language, prompting him to officially enroll in the course.

"At the university, I learned basic English grammar and acquired a broad vocabulary," he recalled.

Despite being ineligible to continue his studies at the university after turning 70, Liu remained steadfast in his enthusiasm for English.

"Interest is the best teacher," he believes, and thus embarked on a self-taught journey of linguistic exploration.

Faced with the challenges of aging, including a declining memory, Liu's path to mastering English was anything but easy. Words that he spent large amounts of time memorizing often slipped from his mind just minutes later, prompting him to adopt a rigorous routine of constant repetition through writing, reading, and recitation. His daily routine would begin at 3 am, and he would sit at his desk, immersed in his studies for hours on end, developing a unique and elegant handwriting style in the process. His notebook, filled with meticulously translated ancient Chinese poems, stands as a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence.

Beyond the confines of his home, Liu actively sought opportunities to practice his spoken English. He frequented the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, engaging in conversations with international students and teachers, and even adopted the English name John. In his community, he founded an English corner, fostering a learning environment where like-minded individuals could gather and exchange ideas. Although the corner has gradually dwindled in attendance, Liu's spirit remains unbroken.

Even after undergoing surgery for acute myocardial infarction last month, Liu's commitment to his studies never wavered. Upon his return home, he immediately resumed his daily routine, driven by a deep-seated desire to make every day count. Liu attributes his mental sharpness and clarity to his continuous engagement with the English language.

Looking ahead, Liu dreams of contributing to the translation and promotion of Yueju Opera, a traditional Chinese art form that holds a special place in his heart. His story serves as a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to pursuing one's passions and dreams.
