Wang Xuanqi, a 22-year-old safety officer at a fire station in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, has saved four lives in just over 10 days, showing incredible courage and responsibility in the face of danger.
As a safety officer, Wang's responsibilities include overseeing workplace safety, firefighting, and disaster prevention in the region. However, he has repeatedly gone above and beyond his usual duties, stepping into life-threatening situations to rescue those in danger.
On Dec 8, he rushed to the scene after learning that a woman was drowning in the sea. Despite not being a skilled swimmer, Wang dove into the freezing water to rescue her.
"It was a life — I couldn't just stand by," he said.
The woman, wearing a down jacket, was struggling to stay afloat, and Wang's decisive actions likely saved her life.
This wasn't the first time Wang demonstrated his immense courage. On Dec 7, he joined a search for two hikers who had gotten lost at Dongpan Mountain. Working alongside firefighters, he navigated steep terrain and worked through the night, locating the hikers after hours of effort.
Then, on Dec 18, Wang intervened to stop a woman from attempting suicide. Learning of the woman's distress, he arrived at the scene and helped her regain composure and abandon her suicidal thoughts.
Though these rescues were outside his official duties, Wang's quick action and unwavering commitment reflect his deep sense of responsibility and courage. His colleagues describe him as reliable and dedicated, often going beyond the call of duty to help others.
"He's the youngest on our team but always calm under pressure. We weren't surprised when we heard about his rescues," said Zhao Qibo, a colleague at the station.
Wang's heroic acts have not only saved lives but also deepened his sense of duty and respect for life.
"These experiences have changed my perspective on life and work. I'll continue to do my best and save every life I can," he said.
