Ningbo city in East China's Zhejiang and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) signed an agreement on jointly building Ningbo College of Materials Engineering on Feb 12.

The college will be the first research and education combined branch UCAS has established outside Beijing.

Its construction, set to begin this year, will be led by the Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a top research institute focusing on material science. The college is expected to be completed in 2020 and put into use one year later.

Zhang Jie, Party chief of UCAS, said Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Ningbo have laid a solid foundation for bilateral cooperation. He hopes the college, with the general goal of supporting the industrial development of the region, could help Ningbo cultivate more high-caliber professionals, promote the commercialization of research findings and build a demonstration base for talent cultivation in this field.

The joint venture will be beneficial to the development of both sides in the long run, said Zheng Shanjie, Party secretary of Ningbo. Zheng pledged that the city will give full support for the college construction. He also extended his expectation for Ningbo and CAS to build a more extensive and in-depth relation in the future.

Ningbo joined hands with CAS in 2004 when the two set up the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology, the first research institute in Zhejiang province under the direct leadership of CAS. In 2009, they furthered the cooperation by establishing Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology which involved more research fields including advanced manufacturing, new energy and life science.
