A total of 45 projects worth 31 billion yuan ($4.62 billion) were signed at the 2019 World Digital Economy Conference (WDEC) which wrapped up in Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province on Sept 8, local media reported.

Huawei Technologies, China's largest smartphone maker and leader in 5G, will invest three billion yuan in Ningbo over the next five years so as to build a strong computing industry ecosystem based on its newly unveiled Kunpeng chipset.

In addition to Huawei, Ningbo also reached partnerships with the nation’s three major telecom carriers as well as China Tower, looking to push ahead with construction on a 5G network and 5G-enabled innovation and applications.

5G-related deals signed at the event totaled 24.6 billion yuan in value.

The city also established collaborative relations with China Electronics Corporation, which will set up a plant in Ningbo to produce silicon carbide, a key ingredient in semiconductors.

The conference also gathered over 100 experts and scholars from around the world to share their insights into digital economy, including George Smoot, a Nobel Prize laureate, Pan Yunhe, academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Jahannes Vizethum, executive director of DIF Industries 4.0.

The conference coincided with the China Smart City and Intelligent Economy Expo, which was attended by more than 400 tech companies and organizations across the world who showcased their latest accomplishments and products in the sectors of 5G, big data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

According to incomplete statistics, more than 52,000 professional merchants took part in the expo this year.

The expo, now in its ninth year, has become a significant platform for promoting cooperation and exchange in smart city construction and intelligent economy in China.
