A national exhibition featuring 220 lacquer paintings created by young artists recently opened in Ningbo's Beilun district.

The exhibition, which has been held every two years since 2017, is sponsored by the Chinese Artists' Association.

As the host venue, Beilun district has been vigorously promoting the art of lacquer painting. The local government has hosted a series of activities themed on the art and opened free training sessions for the public.

Lacquer culture in China can date back to as early as 7,000 years ago when the nation's oldest lacquer ware was created in the Hemudu Site in Zhejiang province.

The exhibition started to solicit exhibits from April 13, and received more than 920 submissions in total.

A total of 220 works were selected for this exhibition. Creators of the top 50 works have also obtained the right to apply for membership with the China Artists’ Association.

The event is part of the third Beilun Youth Culture Festival, which aims to establish a stage for young lacquer painters from all over the country.

It is slated to run until Sept 24 and is open to the public for free.
