Ningbo in East China's Zhejiang province recently was honored as a national demonstration city for service-oriented manufacturing along with Wuxi, Hangzhou, Chengdu and Qingdao.
Five enterprises from Ningbo, including Orient Cable, Locteck, Roaby, Consinee and Beifa, were also designated national models in that regard, bringing the total number of such enterprises in the city to 10.
Service-oriented manufacturing is a new manufacturing paradigm, which integrates manufacturing with service.
In 2016, China launched a campaign to boost the development of service-oriented manufacturing which is set to play a crucial role in upgrading the nation's industrial structure.
In tune with the central government's plans, Ningbo rolled out an action plan earlier this year to promote service-oriented manufacturing and set the goal of cultivating 100 model enterprises or platforms for the new manufacturing mode.
A head official from the Ningbo municipal bureau of economy and information technology noted that a company's added value and competitiveness will be further enhanced if it can produce products as well as provide follow-up services.
One such example is Orient Cable.
In December last year, the Ningbo-based company dispatched technicians to help Georgetown, capital of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, restore electricity.
The country sent an urgent assistance request to the Chinese Embassy in Guyana on Dec 1, after the power supply to some parts of Georgetown were disrupted when undersea cables at the mouth of the Demerara River were damaged by ship anchors.
The team sent by Orient Cable, a cable supplier for Georgetown, arrived in Guyana on Dec 12 and successfully repaired the submarine cable on Dec 24.
