A new era of sustainable energy utilization began in Zhejiang province with the recent launch of the Meishan Wind-Solar-Storage Integrated Project at Ningbo Zhoushan Port, marking the creation of the province's first "green electricity port".

In 2023, Zhejiang Seaport Group, Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group, and State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Company signed a cooperation agreement to jointly advance green and low-carbon port construction in Zhejiang. The Meishan project is a landmark achievement under this agreement.

The project functions as a massive, eco-friendly power bank, converting the natural resources of wind and sunlight into electricity to power the port's various operations. From colossal container ships to heavy-duty trucks and towering gantry cranes, this green energy source ensures a reliable and sustainable power supply.

The project's wind turbines and solar panels generate an impressive annual output of approximately 60 million kWh of electricity, significantly reducing the port's carbon footprint. The reduction in carbon dioxide emissions is equivalent to eliminating the daily emissions of over 4 million cars, demonstrating the project's substantial environmental impact.

Moreover, the integrated energy storage system acts as a buffer during peak demand periods, ensuring a stable and uninterrupted power supply. Any excess green energy generated is not only stored for later use but also contributes to the national grid, further enhancing the region's energy security and sustainability.

According to Ying Xiaolei, chairman of State Grid (Ningbo) Integrated Energy Service Co Ltd, the project's wind turbines are capable of generating enough electricity in a single day to meet the energy needs of a large container ship during its entire stay at the port.

As of Aug 6, the Meishan Wind-Solar-Storage Integrated Project's wind and solar power generation surpassed 10 million kWh, effortlessly meeting the electricity demands of shore power and smart charging stations within the port, solidifying its status as a genuine "green electricity port".

"This project optimizes the port's energy supply structure, elevating the proportion of green and clean energy usage, and presents a replicable model for low-carbon port construction and energy decarbonization solutions nationwide," Ying said.
