Yu Jianhua, a retired teacher from Luotuo Middle School in Ningbo's Zhenhai district, has created numerous artworks with ring-pull cans.

The works feature figures from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chinese deity Chang'e as well as plants such as plum blossoms, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum.

Yu said that he was inspired to create paintings using cans in 2000.

Bright-colored cans are perfect for making ancient women's skirts while those with colorful designs can be used for landscapes, and simple-colored ones can be emblazoned on the back, he said.

With the support of Luotuo Middle School, Yu currently runs a studio where he conducts a course for the school's students.

He hopes that more people can use waste to create works of art.
