From rock stages to lecture halls, Richard Frenneaux has found a new rhythm in Ningbo.

Once the frontman of British band Red Light Company, which signed with Columbia Records in 2007, Frenneaux now teaches at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, where students describe him as inspiring and approachable.

Freshman Zhang Keting recalled being struck by his presence from their first meeting, noting that learning about his music career made him instantly captivating. Yet, she emphasized that it was his patience and warmth in the classroom that truly resonated. Even when students ask basic questions, Frenneaux guides them thoughtfully, offering advice that extends beyond academics to life itself.

Frenneaux describes the transition from stage to lecture hall as surprisingly familiar. He sees parallels between performing for an audience and teaching a class, both requiring focus and energy, though with a different set of spectators.

Since joining the university in 2023, he has balanced teaching with digital content creation. Recognizing a gap in professional music knowledge among enthusiasts, he and his wife created a Bilibili account to produce videos analyzing film scores and classic albums.

This year, Frenneaux published The Music Industry in the Digital Age, exploring the sector from the perspectives of an artist, a scholar, and a producer. He remains committed to one constant mission: sharing music and inspiring others, whether on stage, in the classroom, or through a screen.
