Ningbo has awarded Spanish scientist Juan Jose Rodriguez-Andina the title of Honorary Citizen in recognition of his transformative contributions to the city's research, innovation, and international collaboration.
From the coastal city of Vigo in Spain, Rodriguez-Andina first visited Ningbo three years ago at the invitation of Professor Gao Huijun, director of the Ningbo Institute of Intelligent Equipment Technology. Captivated by the city's coastal charm, rich cultural heritage, and growing innovation ecosystem, he decided to make Ningbo his professional home, joining the Ningbo Institute of Intelligent Equipment Technology and later moving to the Academy for Multidisciplinary Studies at Ningbo University of Technology, where he focused on smart systems and advanced engineering research.
In a short period of time, Rodriguez-Andina and his team have tackled complex control system challenges, developed industrial-grade circuit assembly equipment recognized as provincial firsts, secured national research grants, and fostered close collaboration between universities and industries. He has attracted internationally renowned experts to Ningbo, guided over 30 young scientists — many of whom have stayed to innovate locally — and built bridges connecting Ningbo with global research networks.
As president of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Industrial Electronics Society for 2026–2027, Rodriguez-Andina actively promotes Ningbo worldwide, showcasing its research strengths, innovation culture, and opportunities for talent. These efforts in advancing technology, nurturing talent, and strengthening international collaboration have earned him Ningbo's highest recognition for foreign contributors.
