A group of 100 international students and teachers from the College of International Education at Zhejiang International Studies University visited ancient villages in Ninghai county, Ningbo, on May 18, immersing themselves in traditional Chinese culture and rural life.
The event took place in Qingtan village in Shenzhen town, where students from different countries explored centuries-old architecture, traditional opera stages, and local cultural heritage. Guided by bilingual introductions, they learned about the village's thousand-year history and the cultural stories behind landmarks such as the Zijinyan Pagoda from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).
One of the highlights was the Qingtan garden fair, where international students wore traditional Chinese costumes and joined a parade inspired by ancient imperial scholars. At the historic opera stage, they learned Yueju Opera movements and singing techniques, while hands-on activities, including cuju (ancient Chinese soccer), pitch-pot games, archery, and traditional brush-making, drew enthusiastic participation.
"I experienced many traditional Chinese intangible cultural heritage activities here. Chinese villages are so beautiful," said Russian student Kniazeva Mariia, who took numerous photos to share online.
The cultural journey continued in Nanxi village and Hehong village, where students sampled local specialties, tried paper-cutting, and explored revitalized rural spaces that blend traditional culture with modern tourism.
The event was part of Zhejiang's celebrations for China Tourism Day 2026 and aimed to help international students better understand Chinese rural culture through travel, interaction, and cultural exchange.
