The Ningbo International Sailing Regatta has the potential to become a major fixture on the global sailing calendar and an important platform for showcasing the broader economic and cultural value of sailing, according to World Sailing Vice President Tomasz Chamera.
Speaking during the 2026 Ningbo International Sailing Regatta, Chamera said the event had continued to grow in both scale and competitive standards. He noted that it is already the largest keelboat regatta in Asia and could develop into one of the world's largest events in its class.
Chamera argued that keelboat sailing occupies a unique position within the sport because of its broad participation base and strong links to industries such as boatbuilding, tourism, education, and marine services. Events like Ningbo's regatta, he said, demonstrate how sailing can generate benefits that extend far beyond competition itself.
He also highlighted China's growing role in the international sailing community. In recent years, the country has hosted an increasing number of major sailing events and international meetings, reflecting its emergence as an important player in the sport's global development.
Beyond elite competition, Chamera stressed the importance of youth participation. He described sailing as a powerful educational tool that helps young people develop teamwork, resilience and a connection with the marine environment. Expanding access through schools and local sailing clubs, he suggested, would be key to growing the sport in the long term.
Looking ahead, Chamera said Ningbo is well positioned to strengthen its profile as a global maritime city. With world-class sailing facilities, a strong manufacturing base and an active private sector, he believes the city can use international sailing events to attract talent, investment and broader international attention.
