Ningbo builds momentum as international sports city

Ningbo is gearing up for a packed autumn of sporting action, with major events including the Ningbo Open, the World Weightlifting Championships, the Zhejiang City Basketball League (ZheBA), and a series of sailing, trail-running, and fitness competitions.

Behind the busy calendar is an increasingly diverse and coordinated sports-event system.

The Ningbo Open, a WTA 500 tournament, will return from Oct 17 to 25. In 2025, it attracted six top-10 players and 16 top-20 players, including four Grand Slam singles champions, and won the WTA 500 Progress Award of the Year.

From Oct 27 to Nov 8, Ningbo will host the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships, marking the event's return to China after 31 years. It will also serve as the first Olympic qualifying event for weightlifting for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

Alongside top-tier international events, Ningbo is expanding grassroots competitions, with trail races, sailing regattas, half marathons and basketball games bringing sports closer to residents while showcasing the city's distinctive mountains-and-sea landscape.

In 2025, Ningbo hosted more than 510 city-level and above sporting events, attracting over 2.35 million visits and generating more than 4.6 billion yuan ($686.57 million) in sports-related economic activity.

From elite competition to mass participation, Ningbo is turning sporting events into a platform for urban vitality, tourism, and international visibility.
