A visit to Ningbo in Zhejiang has given Sok Phea, deputy governor of Cambodia's Preah Sihanouk province, fresh ideas for port development and stronger economic ties between the two cities.

Speaking at the close of the 2026 Global Mayors Dialogue in Ningbo on Nov 5, Phea praised the city's infrastructure, climate and innovation-friendly business environment, saying he sees considerable potential for cooperation with his province.

During his three-day visit, he explored Tianyi Pavilion, Dongqian Lake, and the Old Bund. But he also came armed with a practical agenda: learning from Ningbo's experience in developing a modern port.

Preah Sihanouk, home to Cambodia's only deep-water seaport, is seeking to upgrade its port facilities and develop smart, greener operations. Phea was particularly interested in Ningbo-Zhoushan Port's automated container trucks, remote-controlled equipment, and digital systems, which help improve efficiency and supply chain reliability.

A container shipping service linking Ningbo and Preah Sihanouk, launched in 2025, has already created new opportunities for businesses in both locations.

Phea hopes to build on this connection through cooperation in manufacturing, logistics, and trade. Potential areas include textiles, machinery, electronics, and light manufacturing, supported by Ningbo's established industrial supply chains and Cambodia's developing economic zones.

He also sees room for greater tourism and cultural exchanges, adding he hopes more direct flights will bring people from the two cities closer.

Phea said he looked forward to returning to Ningbo, both for official visits and personal trips.
