A plan to construct a marine economic development demonstration zone in Ningbo was recently approved by the Zhejiang provincial government.

According to the plan, Ningbo aims to establish a modern marine industrial system which is environmentally sound and technologically innovative by 2020.

Infrastructure facilitating land and sea coordination and connectivity will be improved, and a marine public service system will be established.

By 2025, the city aims to develop a robust, internationally recognized marine economy with strong innovative capabilities.

The main portion of the demonstration zone will be situated in the eastern part of the Xiangshan peninsula.

The zone will be divided into different parts, with each focusing on a different marine-related segment, such as engineering equipment, tourism, fishing and biomedicine.

As a coastal city in Zhejiang, Ningbo is blessed with abundant sea resources. The city has a total sea area of 8,356 square kilometers, a 1,556-meter-long coastline and 611 islands, accounting for 20 percent, 24 percent and 14 percent of the province's total.
