Despite some turbulent moments, commitment to the 1992 Consensus and opposition to "Taiwan independence" remain the cornerstones of the relationship between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, noted a senior official.

The 1992 Consensus refers to an agreement between the two sides embodying the one-China principle.

Compatriots on both sides of the Straits should strive to maintain stability and promote integrated development, noted Zheng Jianbang, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Zheng made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the third Forum on Cross-Straits Social and Economic Development in Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province on Sept 18.

Zheng Shanjie, Party chief of Ningbo, called on guests at the forum to come up with suggestions and ideas to promote the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations.

More efforts should be made to facilitate stronger relations between Ningbo and Taiwan in terms of trade, infrastructure, resources and industrial standards, he said.

The forum, jointly sponsored by the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang and the Ningbo Municipal Party Committee, is composed of a main forum and three-forums.

Attendees, including officials, experts and scholars, will carry out in-depth discussions on topics such as cross-Straits industrial cooperation, youth exchange and cultural infusion.
