A total of 40,202 trademark applications were filed in Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province in the first half of this year, up 12.3 percent year-on-year, according to official data.

This puts Ningbo in second place among cities in Zhejiang for the first time. The number of trademarks owned by every 10,000 market entities in the city reached 6,364, an uptick of 8.2 percent over the same period in the previous year.

From January to June, commodity trademarks accounted for 76.4 percent of all trademark applications in Ningbo. Trademarks for textiles and clothing and home appliance manufacturing were the two most common types.

Meanwhile, a total of seven public shared brands were registered over the six-month period in an effort to improve the market competitiveness of some regional agricultural products, such as clams from Changjie town and loquat from Xiangshan county.

In the face of a gloomy foreign trade landscape spawned by the COVID-19 epidemic, 3,861 foreign-trade enterprises from the city filed 17,159 applications for domestic trademark registration, up 17.3 percent year-on-year.

The number of trademark registrations related to epidemic control increased sharply. There were 1,628 trademark applications for medical devices and 1,185 for pharmaceuticals, up 106.1 percent and 36.5 percent year-on-year, respectively.

In addition, enterprises from Ningbo stepped up overseas trademark applications during this period. A total of 53 businesses in the city applied for trademark registrations in the international trademark alliance Madrid System.

In 2019, the number of market entities in Ningbo exceeded one million, and that figure had climbed to 1,048,392 by the end of May, up 7.6 percent.
