Ningbo in East China's Zhejiang province retained its place in China's "1-trillion-yuan club" ($153.85 billion) in 2020, which now has 23 cities in total, according to local media reports.

The city came in 12th place in the club, the same as the previous year.

The "1-trillion-yuan club" is made up of cities with an annual gross domestic product (GDP) of at least 1 trillion yuan.

In 2020, Ningbo's GDP totaled 1.24087 trillion yuan, a yearly uptick of 3.3 percent, according to preliminary statistics released by the Ningbo Bureau of Statistics on Jan 26.

In 2018, the city joined the trillion club, ranking 15th. A year later, it rose to 12th in the club when its economic output surged 6.8 percent year-on-year to 1.1985 trillion yuan.

Last year, six cities, namely Quanzhou, Jinan, Hefei, Nantong, Xi'an and Fuzhou, entered the club.

As a national manufacturing hub, Ningbo has been actively developing sectors including green petrochemical, auto parts, fashion and textiles and smart home appliances.

The city recently rolled out an ambitious plan to facilitate transformation and upgrading of its traditional manufacturing sector and aims to become a provincial model in this regard by 2023.
