Ningbo in East China's Zhejiang province ranked first among 157 sub-provincial cities and prefecture-level cities in China in a national appraisal for administrative protection for intellectual property rights, according to local media reports.

Following Ningbo were Shenzhen, Shaoxing, Jinhua, Shijiazhuang, Wenzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Taizhou, and Guangzhou.

Ningbo has recently made great efforts to strengthen intellectual property rights protection. In October last year, the city rolled out a special guideline on this matter.

In 2020, the city handled a total of 1,765 patent infringement or counterfeit cases, as well as 454 trademark infringement or counterfeit cases. More than 13 million yuan ($2 million) in fines had been issued.

The city's improved protection of intellectual property rights has spurred local innovation and entrepreneurship.

Official data shows that a total of 14,311 patents were authorized in Ningbo in the first quarter of this year, up 29.7 percent year-on-year. Among them, the number of invention patents increased by 113.6 percent year-on-year and accounted for more than 10 percent of the city’s total, 4.3 percent higher than the same period last year.

Among the authorized invention patents, 1,212 of them, or 77.8 percent, were filed by enterprises, up from 559 in 2020.
