Tongshan community, the first "future community" in Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province, broke ground on June 23, local media reported.

Located in the city's Beilun district, the Tongshan community was included in a pilot "future community" construction program in Zhejiang last year.

With a total investment of about 6.3 billion yuan ($969.23 million), the community will be equipped with elderly nursing homes, sports venues, shopping centers and an emergency security system when it is completed in three years. Smart housekeeping services will also be made available to residents.

The pilot area of the community spans 20.28 hectares. The project is expected to benefit 3,612 people and attract 2,219 talents with various skills.

The concept of a future community, which was mentioned in the provincial government report in 2019, refers to an urban development project that aims to make cities more people-oriented, environmentally friendly and digital.

Zhejiang aims to build around 100 pilot communities by 2021 and implement the project throughout the province by 2022.
