Ningbo athletes post record-breaking performance at National Games

Ningbo athletes claimed a total of 41 medals at the 14th National Games which closed in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, on Sept 27.

The haul of 20 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze medals marked Ningbo's best performance in the history of the Games.

The city also won four gold in mass public events including Bocce, Go and beach volleyball. At the 14th National Games, 185 disciplines across 19 sports were made open to the public to boost the national fitness campaign.

Olympic gold medalists from Ningbo enjoyed a fruitful outing at the Games.

Swimmer Wang Shun bagged six gold medals, bringing his total gold medals tally at the National Games to 15, the highest among all Chinese athletes.

Fifteen-year-old swimmer Yu Yiting clinched four gold medals and 21-year-old shooter Yang Qian pocketed two golds and a bronze at the national sports event.

Shi Zhiyong broke national records in the snatch and total with 170kg and 365kg respectively, surpassing his own world records in the men's 73kg at the quadrennial Games.

Other events Ningbo athletes won gold in included women's pole vault, men]s badminton doubles and men's freestyle 65kg wrestling.

The 15th National Games, which will be held in 2025, will be co-hosted by the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Guangdong.
