A public welfare project initiated by a Ningbo resident recently won gold at the 2021 China Charity Fair.

The project, which provides free light-repair services for the disabled, was launched in Cixi in 2015 and has been promoted throughout the province as well as in other provinces and regions including Jilin and Guizhou provinces and Tibet autonomous region.

Qian Haijun, an employee at an electric power company, is largely responsible for getting the project off the ground. He has been a volunteer at a local community since 1999, helping residents with electrical problems.

Qian decided to spend more time helping seniors after he noticed many of them were living alone. He made 500 cards with his name and mobile number for the elderly.

Qian's company was unaware of his efforts until many letters of thanks from the seniors were sent to the company. In 2012, the company established a voluntary team known as the "Qian Haijun Voluntary Team" to offer electrical services to residents of Cixi.

In 2014, the team found hidden electrical problems existed in residences of about 40 percent of disabled people in 10 communities in Cixi, such as improperly connected and aging wires. So project to provide services for them was launched in 2015, including light-repair and maintenance and education on the safe use of electricity.

The project has been promoted throughout Zhejiang province since 2019.

In Sept, the Ningbo Qian Haijun Voluntary Service Center and a vocational school from Cixi conducted a training course for electricians from rural areas.

According to Qian, he plans to train 50 electricians from rural areas every year so that the project can be implemented in more places across the country.
