Hong May, a vessel loaded with 178,000 metric tons of iron ore from Australia, berthed at a wharf in Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province on Sept 20.
The ship's arrival marked the start of operations of the 300,000-ton Zhongzhai Ore Wharf, which is the largest ore terminal in Ningbo.
Affiliated to the Chuanshan Port, an integral part of Ningbo Zhoushan Port, the wharf is designed to handle 20 million tons of iron ore per year. Its operation will reduce the transportation cost in ore imports, thus fueling the development of the iron and steel industry in the nation.
Ningbo Zhoushan Port, the world's largest port by cargo throughput volume, was ranked 10th among global shipping hubs in terms of comprehensive strength, according to the Xinhua-Baltic ISCD Index 2022 released in July.
