A group of Hong Kong youth, representing prestigious institutions such as the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and City University of Hong Kong, embarked on a transformative journey to Ningbo, Zhejiang province, from Aug 12 to 17.

The cultural and educational exchange, entitled "2024 Future Stars Hong Kong Youth Exchange Program", aimed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Ningbo's rich history, culture, and modern developments.

"Although my ancestral roots lie in Ningbo, this is my first time really exploring its history and culture. It's truly inspiring hearing how people throughout history contributed to the city's growth. Their patriotism deserves to be remembered and emulated," said He Weilun, a student from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The program highlighted the profound impact of Ningbo-born entrepreneurs, such as Pao Yue-kong, who donated $20 million to establish the Ningbo University in 1984. This generous act sparked a wave of philanthropy among overseas Ningbo-natives, resulting in over 600 million yuan ($84 million) donated by over 60 patriotic individuals over three decades. Ningbo University boasts over 50 buildings and 20 scholarships funded by them, standing as a testament to their commitment to supporting the region's development.

"Patriotism transcends mere emotional expression; it is a responsibility and a mission," said another participant surnamed Chen.

The exchange program also showcased Ningbo's thriving industries and technological advancements.

At Novel Optics, formerly Ningbo Optical Instrument Factory, the youngsters were impressed by the company's technological innovation path. Wang, a student from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, expressed his eagerness to intern at the company.

Inside the future factory of Orient Cable, the automation and precision of the production lines left a profound impression on the visitors.

"There are very few workers in sight. Towering machines that dominate the landscape. Ningbo’s manufacturing sector is advancing rapidly and impressively," said Deng, a student from Hong Kong Baptist University.

The visit to Ningbo Zhoushan Port's Chuanshan Port Area further underscored the city's status as a bustling international hub. As the students gazed out from the observation deck, witnessing the seamless operation of colossal container cranes, Deng exclaimed, "The title of 'Oriental Great Port' is well-deserved."

The rural charm of Ningbo was equally captivating. In the quaint village of Xilifang in Xiangshan county, the group marveled at the village's cleanliness, rich cultural ambiance, and exquisite homestays.

"From Hong Kong to Ningbo, from the Greater Bay Area to the Yangtze River Delta, both regions play increasingly pivotal roles in serving national strategies," said an organizer, "This journey aims to inspire our youth to become friendship ambassadors of the Ningbo-Hong Kong cooperation, and jointly create a brighter future, following in the footsteps of our predecessors."
