Ninghai implements sustainable farming solutions
Agriculture in Ninghai county in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, has undergone remarkable improvements in crop yield and land efficiency.
The Xiayangtu area in the county was once dry fields with high salinity levels. To tackle these challenges and enhance land productivity, Ninghai initiated a series of agricultural development projects, including the creation of the Ninghai National Modern Agricultural Industrial Park. The reclamation process required river dredging, land leveling, the construction of water pumping stations and irrigation channels. Additionally, facilities for water supply, electricity, and lighting were installed to support farming activities.
By March in 2024, the second phase of the project was completed, adding 800 hectares of paddies, which were quickly planted with early-season rice.
After the rice harvest, the area shifted to planting broccoli, covering over 1,300 hectares. This year's harvest has been highly successful, with yields reaching 30,000 kilograms per hectare. The rotation model of rice and broccoli has not only ensured food security but also significantly boosted the land's economic returns.
From saline-alkali soil to productive farmland, Xiayangtu is a testament to the rapid modernization of agriculture in Ninghai and reflects the region's commitment to improving agricultural productivity and sustainability.
