A sea-rail intermodal train loaded with over 100 twenty-foot equivalent units of daily goods departed from Yiwu West Railway Station in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, on March 5, marking a significant milestone for the "Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Port" container sea-rail intermodal route.
This route has now surpassed a cumulative volume of 1 million TEUs, becoming the first domestic sea-rail intermodal route to achieve this feat. The achievement signifies Ningbo-Zhoushan Port's commitment to advancing high-quality multimodal transportation.
Launched in February 2009, the "Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan Port" route serves as a crucial link between the global small commodity market and the world's largest port. It plays a vital role in the Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan open channel by handling a variety of businesses, including small commodities, solar photovoltaic panels, and returning China-Europe trains.
Over the past 16 years, the route has seen an average annual volume growth of over 10 percent, with the volume exceeding 180,000 TEUs in 2024.
In 2025, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has been exploring new initiatives such as coordinating the operations between China-Europe trains and sea-rail intermodal services and launching the "Yiwu West-Ningbo-Zhoushan Port-Wilhelmshaven" express line.
The port's plans include deeper integration into the "Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan" and "Jinhua-Lishui-Wenzhou" channels, further boosting its sea-rail intermodal transportation capacity and advancing toward a world-class port.
