The 54th Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta concluded in Palma on April 5, showcasing incredible performances from global athletes. Among the standout moments was Ningbo's Yan Zheng, who secured silver in women's foil windsurfing, contributing to China's impressive haul of one gold, one silver, and one bronze.
Founded in 1968, the Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta is a cornerstone of the Sailing Grand Slam Series, attracting elite participants from around the world. This year's event featured over 800 boats and more than 1,000 athletes from over 60 countries and regions.
Yan's journey to this pivotal moment was a remarkable one. Despite an unfavorable start, she steadily climbed over the course of the 19 races, advancing to the medal round and securing silver. Gold was claimed by British Olympian Emma Wilson.
Born in 2001, Yan is a rising star, winning multiple national championships. In August 2023, at the 2023 Allianz Sailing World Championships, she helped China secure an Olympic berth in foil windsurfing for the Paris Olympics.
China also celebrated gold in women's foil kiteboarding, with Li Wan defeating Olympic champion Ellie Aldridge. Other successes included Zhao Huancheng and Sha Su taking bronze in Nacra 17. Several Chinese athletes placed in the top 10 in other categories.
The team is now preparing for the Semaine Olympique Francaise, scheduled from April 19 to 26, continuing their pursuit of excellence.
