800 flag football athletes compete in Ningbo

The Xuedou Mountain 2025 Ningbo Flag Football Open Tournament concluded on May 25 after three days of intense competition at the Fenghua Sports Center in Ningbo, marking a historic milestone for the internationalization of flag football in China.

The tournament welcomed over 800 athletes from 55 clubs across 16 countries and regions, bringing together teams from Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa — the first event of its kind in Asia to feature such diverse international participation.

The competition followed the latest International Federation of American Football (IFAF) regulations, with divisions for youth teams (U12, U15) and open categories (men's and women's teams). To ensure fairness, 20 international referees were invited to officiate.

Players showcased their agility, teamwork, and skill, thrilling spectators with spectacular touchdowns.

Dawoud Alsarraj, captain of Kuwait's national team, emphasized the tournament's significance in preparing for the upcoming Asian Cup, while Thai athlete Wen praised Fenghua's immersive cultural and sports experience. Russian player Sabina embraced local traditions by making qingtuan (glutinous rice balls) and sharing Chinese delicacies with friends back home.

As flag football gains momentum ahead of its official inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, this event serves as a major step in promoting the sport in China. Jointly organized by multiple stakeholders, it aims to enhance public fitness, establish Fenghua's unique sports brand, and boost international visibility, further integrating sports, tourism, and culture.
